A total of 33 people have been killed in Pernabuco state since storms began to hit the area on Tuesday night. “Another five deaths were recorded during the storm on Tuesday,” the Civil Protection said in a statement.

Torrential rains forced nearly 1,000 residents to flee their homes due to floods and landslides.

Videos posted on social media show flooded roads, collapsed houses and landslides.

According to meteorologists, the rains are expected to continue for the next 24 hours in the state of Pernabuco.
