Rory McIlroy believes the Saudi golf rebels should be allowed to play in the Ryder Cup despite their expulsion.
The Northern Irishman, an outspoken critic of the LIV Golf Invitational Series, turned down the opportunity to embark on a breakaway tour earlier this year on moral grounds.
However, several stars including Dustin Johnson, Lee Westwood, Ian Palter and Phil Mickelson are in the series and will be playing their first tournament this week.
Both the PGA and the DP World Tour warn that players who attend LIV golf events face lifetime bans that call Ryder Cup eligibility into question.
Before the Canadian Open on the PGA Tour, McIlroy said: They are part of the Ryder Cup and will take a look at Pooles’ (Ian Palter) history in the Ryder Cup.
“It would be very embarrassing if he wasn’t involved in the future.
It’s hard because I’m on tour without protection, but I think everyone should get in the room and check it out.
“Pro gaming feels like everything has gotten more consistent and now it’s on a beautiful trajectory that’s falling apart again. I don’t think that’s a good thing.”
The first LIV Golf event will kick off on Thursday afternoon at the Centurion Club in Hertfordshire.
The threat of being kicked out of the Ryder Cup didn’t discourage the likes of Westwood and Porter from submitting their work.
St Albans has a prize pool of around £20m with the winner having over $33m. During that time, many participants received huge signatures for a fee of მილი 100 million.
A person involved may have tricked McIlroy into a new tour, but the 33-year-old reiterated his intention to avoid Greg Norman and LIV Golf.
