Chelsea have confirmed that Bruce Buck has resigned as club chairman. The Americans say it’s the “right time” for the new owner to test his footprints.
Since Roman Abramovich was acquired by the West London Club in 2003, the 76-year-old has been in charge for the past 19 years and was expected to remain in his role under Todd Bowl.
However, despite extensive negotiations with the club’s new owners over its future, Buck will step down as chairman at the end of the month and will continue to support the club in his new role as senior adviser.
“We are proud to have helped make Chelsea’s great success on the pitch and have made a positive impact in the community,” he said for many years.
“It’s time to step down and build new real estate on our strong foundation.
“The owners have a compelling vision for Chelsea’s future and look forward to working with an excellent staff, players, coaches and supporters to help them achieve this new role.”
Chelsea won 18 major titles and 12 women’s team titles during her tenure at Buck. She also played an important role in the establishment of the Chelsea Charity Foundation.
“Bruce has taken Chelsea Football Club to the highest levels of national and international football and has developed one of the most active social responsibility projects in sport,” said Boell.
“Thank you for Bruce’s service and his loyalty to the club.”
Bailey, who heads a consortium financed by investment firm Clearlake Capital, will become chairman of Chelsea.
Back may not be the only prominent member of the Abramovich-era hierarchy to leave Stamford Bridge this summer. There are also important questions about the future of the club’s director, Marina Granovskaya.
