Election in Brazil makes Conmebol withdraw the final of the South American Championship in Brasilia

by

This year’s Copa Sudamericana final, scheduled for October 1, will be played at the Mario Alberto Kempes stadium in Córdoba, Argentina, replacing Brasília, the location originally chosen to host the event. The announcement was made by Conmebol this Thursday (23).

The change was requested by the CBF (Brazilian Football Confederation), given that the general elections in the country take place the day after the game, on October 2, a Sunday.

Córdoba has already played host to the 2020 Copa Sudamericana final, when Argentine Defensa y Justicia, led by former striker Hernán Crespo – who would later coach São Paulo –, beat Lanús 3-0.

The tournament will share a prize pool of US$ 60 million (R$ 314.3 million), and the 2022 champion will pocket US$ 5 million (R$ 26 million) – US$ 1 million more than the prize paid to Athletico, last year’s winner.
