Last year Wimbledon champion Matteo Berettini was forced to withdraw from the championship due to a positive coronavirus test.
The Italian, who won the turf at Stuttgart and Queen’s Club this summer, announced it in an Instagram post.
“It was heartbreaking to announce that we had to leave @wimbledon due to a positive COVID-19 test,” said Berrettini, the world number 11.
“I have flu symptoms and have been in quarantine for the past few days. The symptoms were not terrible, but this morning another one to protect the health and safety of other athletes and everyone else at the tournament. I have decided it is important to take the test.
“There are no words to explain the extreme frustration I feel. This year’s dream is over, but I’m back stronger. Thanks for your support”.
Berettin, who replaced Lucky Loser with Elijah Imer, was seeded eighth and was scheduled to face Cristian Garin in his first match on the first court on Tuesday.
Following his withdrawal, former finalist Marin Cilic announced on Monday that he had also tested positive for Covid-19.
“Hello everyone, it’s a shame to share with you that I passed the COVID test,” confirmed the Croat.
“I wanted to be isolated and ready, but unfortunately I still feel sick and can’t compete at the best of times.”
After reaching the semi-finals of the French Open, the 14th-seeded Zilich was considered a strong outsider.
Cilic and Barrett were half of Rafael Nadal, and their opponents in the fourth round were Kirick.
