Italian cyclist Daniel Oss, 35, was forced to withdraw from the Tour de France after sustaining a broken neck in a high-speed collision with a fan filming the riders with his cell phone at the edge of the track this week.

Twitter footage of the crash shows Oss crashing into the line of spectators next to the race track and flying off his bike. Several fans appeared to fly to the ground on the third of 11 cobblestone stretches en route from Lille to Arenberg.

Oss managed to recover enough to cross the finish line at the end of the stage, but medical tests revealed he broke his neck in the accident and had to leave the tour. “Additional examinations revealed a fracture of a cervical vertebra requiring immobilization for a few weeks. “Daniel Oss was therefore forced to leave the Tour de France,” the athlete’s team wrote on Twitter.

Two other athletes withdrew from the competition due to injuries. Michael Gogl broke his collarbone and pelvis bone after colliding with the Italian who fell on the track. He will undergo surgery at the hospital in Herentals, Belgium.

Jack Haig also withdrew from the race due to “multiple bruises and bruises to his body and a cut above the elbow”, team members said.
