Novak Djokovic looked to play a controversial kiss aimed at fans when he defeated Cameron Norris in the semi-finals on Center Court at Wimbledon.
The World No. 3 got into a nasty brawl with the spectators and gave what was a relatively routine four-set win for Home’s favourites.
After sealing his place in Sunday’s final against Nick Kyrgios, Djokovic confronted fans who tried to postpone him while he was serving and kissed his way.
Not everyone liked this gesture. “The crowd isn’t too excited about the reaction, but they don’t care,” said BBC commentator Andrew Castle. Fans aren’t sure about it, it’s an interesting reaction. “
Commentator John McEnroe added, “He didn’t have to do that, but stick with what the guy is doing.”
However, Djokovic claimed to have kissed in the direction of the cheering fans, but admitted that it would be difficult to fight against such a partying crowd.
“(The kiss) was for the people who supported me,” he said later.
Well, it’s never good for the whole stadium to support your opponent. That is certainly what I expected from the match.
Since he’s a hero in his hometown, they wanted to beat him, so it makes sense for that to happen. I knew what kind of environment I was in.
But I felt like I was keeping my focus right. I sat down, couldn’t play well and felt good, but somehow I was able to turn the game around.
“He asked for the support of the people and he received it. It was not easy to finish the game… I felt a lot of pressure to do it,” he said.
