Palmeiras may have a Mexican once again on their way to the Club World Cup final.
In a draw held this Monday (29), the Brazilian team will face, in the semifinals, the winner of the confrontation between Al Ahly (EGI) and Monterrey (MEX) in the 2021 edition of the competition.
Both the champions of the Libertadores and the Champions League will only debut at this stage of the tournament. Chelsea (ING) will take on Al Hilal, from Saudi Arabia, or whoever goes through the confrontation between Al Jazira, from the United Arab Emirates, and Auckland, from Australia. This is the game that opens the tournament.
Last season, Palmeiras made the semifinal against Tigres, also from Mexico. They were defeated by 1-0. In the dispute for third place, they lost to the same Al Ahly, who can now be rivals. After a 0-0 tie, they fell on penalties.
The alviverde team qualified to seek the first World Cup in its history by beating Libertadores for the third time, the second consecutively. Last Saturday (27), they beat Flamengo 2-1 at Estádio Centenário, in Montevideo.
FIFA also announced this Monday the dates for the World Cup. The tournament will be played from February 3rd to 12th, 2022, in the UAE.
