Flamengo fires Renato Gaúcho after losing Libertadores final

by

Flamengo announced this Monday (29) that Renato Gaúcho is no longer the team’s coach.

The coach, who for some time has not been well regarded by the fans of the club, did not resist the defeat against Palmeiras in the Libertadores final, played last Saturday (27), in Montevideo, Uruguay.

“The Clube de Regatas do Flamengo informs that, after a conversation between the parties, the coach Renato Gaúcho no longer commands the main team”, informed the association, via Twitter.

Dismissed from Grêmio in April and now with Flamengo, Renato passed by in the 2021 season after five straight years in which he won important titles.

For the club from Rio Grande do Sul, he won the Copa do Brasil (2016), Libertadores (2017) and Recopa (2018), in addition to the 2018, 2019 and 2020 state championships.

Before leaving the tricolor team, the coach was still marked by some controversial phrases, especially some that he used to defend himself from criticism after the team’s performance drop.

On one of these occasions, he even mentioned Flamengo himself. “If one day the Grêmio board says: ‘Look, Renato, you have R$ 200 million to hire’. Then you can demand beautiful football from me,” he said.

“[Eles [Flamengo] they made a very strong team, so they have an obligation to win, yes. And it’s the same thing with Palmeiras.”

In July, when he was hired by Flamengo, these declarations only increased the responsibility that the coach would have, at least, until the end of the year, when his contract would expire.

However, in addition to the defeat in the Libertadores decision, just against the Palmeiras team, the pressure on the captain has been great since his elimination in the semifinals of the Copa do Brasil, in a duel with Athletico. Not to mention the fact that the team has very remote chances of winning the Brazilian Championship.

The national title, in fact, can be defined this Tuesday (30). For that, Flamengo just doesn’t defeat Ceará, at Maracanã, by the 36th round. This would make the miners’ 78 points unattainable for the competitor — in front of the Cearenses and until the end of the Brazilian, Mauricio Souza, who commanded the sub-20 rubro-negro and who had been helping on Renato’s commission, will command the team .

Atlético-MG still has three games to play until the end of the competition. The team from Rio, with 67 points, enters the field four more times. Even if the red-black rival scores these 12 points, the miners will be champions with just one more victory. His next game will be against Bahia, in Salvador, on Thursday (2). After that, the opponents will be Red Bull Bragantino and Grêmio.

In all, Renato led Flamengo in 38 games, with 25 wins, 8 draws and 5 defeats, an improvement of 72.8%.

Still in the dressing room of the Centenário stadium, where Flamengo lost to Palmeiras, the coach already spoke to the squad in a farewell tone.

“When I was at Grêmio, I thought this group was f…. Now, I saw that you are much more than I thought. I apologize for anything, to those I didn’t give the opportunity. But it was a pleasure working with you,” he said .
