Their necessity was proven by the safety seminars held before the start of the “AEGEAN 600” International Sailing Race.
During the race and outside the islet of Kandeliussa of Nisyros, a particularly large wave caused the sailor Stelios Marquizos from the “Foxy Lady” to find himself in the sea.
However, the knowledge the crew had acquired from the “Man overboard” seminar of the Panhellenic Offshore Sailing Club proved to be valuable and the athlete was rescued. In the racing field, the Italian “Hagar V” emerged as a major protagonist of this year’s event as it was the winner both in the MAXI category, as well as in the IRC and ORC. From the Greek side, the best position was won by “Phaedra” which was ranked first in category 2 in IRC and ORC.
“We were seven miles east of Kandeliussa and at the change of shift, at midnight, Stelios Marquizos comes out of the cabin to take over the shift. Before he could even fasten his safety belt, a huge wave covers the boat and Stelios Marquizos is swept out to sea,” described the crew of the “Foxy Lady”, which consists of experienced sailors.
The crew of the boat faithfully followed the procedure that had been taught in the P.O.I.A.TH seminar. “Man at sea”, which was also part of the seminar held on the boats before the start of the international event. The rescue was a complete success and within 15 minutes Stelios Marquizos boarded his boat safely.
In the racing field, the Italian boat was a protagonist again this year. This time, the ‘Hagar V’ emerged as the big winner of the ‘AEGEAN 600’ as it prevailed in three categories. “Thanks to sailing on Lake Garda we have learned how to sail close to the shores. In the leeward area of Rhodes, for example, we chose to sail close to the coast in order to benefit from the onshore winds”, emphasized skipper Gregor Stiepfle.
The best performance from the Greek side was made by “Phaedra” skippered by Vassilis Priftis. “This year the race was faster than last year. We got a little stuck in Milos and Karpathos. After Kos, we encountered northerlies at 25 to 30 knots. Congratulations to everybody. It is an amazing event on the most beautiful sea track in the world”, underlined the skipper.
The curtain of the “Aegean 600” will fall on Saturday (July 16) with the Awards Ceremony at the Technological Cultural Park of Lavrio.
