Opinion – PVC: League of clubs cannot be Eurico Miranda style

by

Flamengo withdrew its appeal to the STJD for the right to play at home the return match of the quarterfinals of the Copa do Brasil, against Athletico-PR. There was light! Live! There will be no league as long as clubs fight over nitpicking or over regulations and conventions only noticed when they hurt them.

The red-black threat reminded leaders of the past, such as Vicente Matheus and Eurico Miranda.

In the 1979 Campeonato Paulista, the then Corinthians president refused to accept the table, which marked a double round, with Palmeiras x Guarani, followed by Corinthians x Ponte Preta.

In the manager’s opinion, the biggest fans in São Paulo could not share the income. Corinthians did not enter the field, lost by WO, but stopped the championship with an injunction from the common court.

Until today, the loss of rhythm of Palmeiras, by Telê Santana, and the Corinthians title, of stars such as Sócrates and Palhinha, are attributed to the stoppage. One thing does not need to be linked to the other, but Matheus did not accept a collective decision and used an individualistic argument.

Once, Eurico Miranda, president of Vasco for many years, called indignantly after hearing from this columnist: “They say that Eurico is good for Vasco and bad for Brazilian football. Now, if Vasco is part of Brazilian football and Eurico is bad for the Brazilian football, so it’s also bad for Vasco”.

The consequence is obvious.

Flamengo is, today, one of the leaders in the process of creating the league and, at the same time, one of those who think less collectively. There will be no project of a new Brazilian football without solidarity.

There is, yes, a flaw in the CBF regulations, which should have written a ban on two teams from the same headquarters to decide a spot in the quarterfinals and semifinals of the Copa do Brasil in the same city.

It may be a stupid convention, but it’s been around for years and is only contested when it’s convenient and by those who don’t pay attention to the matter before entering the dispute.

Flamengo faced Athletico-PR four times for the Copa do Brasil. He decided every time in Rio de Janeiro and was eliminated in two of them. If there is disagreement on the application of the rules, the debate is legitimate. Taking it to court is a lack of sportsmanship and giving public opinion the impression that there was bad faith – and there wasn’t.

It is similar, although from another family, to the issue of broadcast or missing audio, in field and video refereeing errors. All clubs go to the CBF to complain when they feel wronged.

In fact, the arbitration commission fails. It exposes the audio of Gustavo Gómez’s penalty in Calleri, in Palmeiras 2 x 1 São Paulo. But it does not disclose the offside line not drawn in the same game. Also does not show the audio of the yellow card to Marcos Rocha, who deserved red, in a bid not verified by VAR.

Atlético-MG complains of not having access to the referees’ conversations that justify the scoring of Flamengo’s second goal, in the 2-0 of the round of 16 of the Copa do Brasil. Everything indicates that the ball has crossed the line. It was a goal. But, if Minas Gerais leaders have doubts, they deserve to receive an answer to their demand.

There’s a lot of problem to be solved. There will be no solution as long as each club pulls the heat exclusively for its sardines.

We are in 2022, we have advanced almost a quarter of the 21st century, and the look is still club-like. The leaders who intend to form a strong Brazilian league cannot act in such a petty and selfish way as Vicente Matheus and Eurico Miranda did in the past.
