THE Thomas Lane had just been hired by the Minneapolis police and was on street patrol on May 25, 2020, along with another recruit, Alexander Kueng, when a store owner accused George Floyd of giving him a counterfeit twenty-dollar bill. While they were trying to put the 46-year-old, who was behaving strangely, into the patrol car, two other, experienced police officers, Derek Chauvin and Tu Tao, arrived. The four managed to knock the African American to the ground and handcuffed him. Chauvin knelt on his neck, with the two inexperienced police officers by his side, while Tu Tao kept the bystanders at bay. None of them made the slightest move, despite Floyd’s protests, not even when he lost consciousness.
Tu Tao and Alexander Kueng will be tried in the fall for “accomplice to murder” by a state court in Minnesota. Lane has pleaded guilty to that charge and is awaiting sentencing, which he will likely serve concurrently with the federal sentence.
