Manchester United were slightly injured when midfielder Scott McTominay failed to reach the final round of the pre-season tour of Australia.

Red Devils have spent the last two weeks in Asia and Australia preparing for the new season and playing Premier League team-mate Aston Villa in Perth on Saturday.

After heavy rain overnight, there were some concerns that the pitch would be cut off and flooded, and the match might not continue.

However, after much effort to drain the excess water and dry the pitch, the game went with open hands.

However, one of the players not featured was McTominay, and the midfielder (who was highly featured under Erik Ten Hag before the season) was excluded as a precaution.

MUTV explains: He trained this morning but they don’t want to put him at risk in this game.

United will have two more friendly matches before the start of the new Premier League campaign, followed by a friendly between Atletico Madrid and Rayo Vallecano on the weekends.

Praising the decision not to endanger McTominay, the club’s legendary Andy Cole told MUTV: There are plenty of games this season.

“If you miss a game and you can play next week, let’s do it. You’ve played really well so far, so be smart about your injuries.”

“Yes, there were some people who went missing due to illness, but I didn’t get injured on tour. I think that’s a big plus.”

When Ten Hag arrived at Optus Stadium on Saturday, he was watching the pitch closely and hoping his player would be able to focus on the next game at the end of the tough tour.

A Dutchman who told MUTV before the match said:

“And, as always, after two weeks I’m always a bit tired and I can work together and as a team, whether the players are focused or not.”

Asked if he was any closer to finding the starting line-up for the Premier League season opener, he replied: “I haven’t talked about the starting line-up yet. I need to make a team that I can choose from to start game 11.

“And it varies from game to game and depends on the strength of the opponent, the weakness of the opponent, the form of the player, etc.”
