Putting the health of footballers in the foreground, the UEFA decided to update and tighten the protocol for the treatment of head injuries and possible concussions.
The procedure that should henceforth be followed in head injuries, is:
-In case of a possible concussion, the referee must stop the game allowing the injured player to be examined by the team doctor. Players should stay calm and not interfere.
-The initial examination should not last more than three minutes, unless it is a serious injury that requires care to be provided to the player on the pitch or to remain immobile to be transported immediately to the hospital.
-If the assessment of the situation cannot be made after three minutes or a concussion is suspected, the player should not be allowed to continue playing.
-A player who suffers a head injury and requires an examination for a possible concussion will be allowed to continue playing after the team doctor confirms to the referee that he is able to do so.
-The decision belongs exclusively to the team doctor. Coaches, referees and staff are not allowed to intervene in the assessment of the situation and the decision of the doctor.
At the same time, the doctors of the clubs and the national teams should organize a meeting with the football players, the coaches and the staff to inform them about the concussion protocol followed by UEFA.
