Edu reveals how close Arsenal are to defeating former Leeds United winger Rafinha and Barcelona.
The Gunners were heavily linked to the Rafinha move before the Brazilians signed Barcelona in a deal worth up to £55m.
The 25-year-old player, who was announced this Friday before the fans at the Catalan club’s training ground, yesterday scored a goal in a pre-season match against Real Madrid.
Rafinha has been one of Leeds’ most important players since investing £17m from Rennes in 2020, scoring 17 goals and making 65 appearances to avoid relegation from the Premier League last season. He offers 12 assists.
His form has drawn the attention of many clubs, and Edu admits he spoke to the player’s agent and asked to be kept informed of progress.
Asked by Leeds how close Arsenal would be to signing Rafinha, Edu told Skysports:
“Fair enough. Deco is his agent and I have a good relationship, so we had a talk with Deco. [with him] – We are friends.
“I just said to Deco: ‘Can you explain the Rafinha situation to me?'”
“Well, thank you very much. If anything happens, please let me know so I can investigate the situation and understand. If not, that’s fine. We’ll continue the relationship.”
Although the transfer to Rafinha did not happen, Arsenal enjoyed a productive transfer period, bringing Gabriel Jesus, Alexander Zinchenko, Fabio Vieira, Matt Turner and Markinhos to the Emirate.
When asked if he managed to win Mikel Arteta’s main goal this summer, Edu added:
I’m sure there are people who want to play Champions League football, but I think we can also offer something special to the players.
You can be part of a group of players who can achieve something special for this football club and for the Champions League. And I always ask them if they want to be part of the project that we are building as we are doing.
“I am sure we will do something special for this football club. Explain it to the players and they will really understand.” [it] And that’s why they’re here. “
