Alex Scott warned the country of the challenges ahead as England’s defense faced a difficult night in the European Women’s Championship final against Germany.
The eight-time champions secured their place in Sunday’s final, beating France 2-1 in Milton Keynes on Wednesday night.
Two more goals from Germany’s Alexandra Popp raised her tournament tally to 6 and put England’s Bethmead at the top of the scoring charts.
The Pope is the main threat to the German attack, but Scott warned England to expect threats from many avenues. Their movement through the channel is extremely dangerous.
It will be a battle for England’s back line as a whole. “Germany’s movement in the channel is so good that the whole defense has to be on their game,” Scott told the BBC.
Scott, who made 140 appearances for England, enjoyed the Germany-France clash on Wednesday and believed Pop’s relentless attitude made the difference.
“What a wonderful match we have witnessed,” he said. Pace, skill level, passes from both teams.
“What happens is that the German team is very efficient in everything they do, and there are strikers like Alexandra Popp who are relentless in front of goal and have so much advantage. When that was the difference.
The England-Germany final takes place on Sunday at 5pm at Wembley, and Scott may not be able to control his excitement for the next four days.
“Everyone was talking today and saying, ‘Imagine the England-Germany final at Wembley.’ Well, that’s happening,” he said.
“The turmoil has started. I’m going home with the geese, but what’s the mood on Sunday?”
