Estonia “cuts” Russians and Belarusians from tennis tournaments

by

Estonia has banned any presence of Russian and Belarusian tennis players, becoming the second country after the United Kingdom to appeal such a decision. Meanwhile, three tournaments are being organized in the state of Estonia with two being under the auspices of the ITF and the third being the Tallinn Open of the WTA 250 series starting on September 26.

It is recalled that at the recent Wimbledon there were no points as support from the ATP and WTA side. It remains to be seen how the latter will react to the decision in question, since so far nothing has emerged. It seems more likely that a fine will be imposed and points will be deducted in the aforementioned tournament as well.

The Deputy Minister of Culture of Estonia, Liina Kersna, made the following statements on this matter: “International sports are no longer separated from politics in any way, Russia and Belarus use sports to achieve their strategic goals. With this decision we are sending a clear message.”

Earlier on July 5, Liina Kershna, along with the sports ministers and sports officials of 34 states, signed a petition calling on international federations to ban athletes from Russia and Belarus from participating in international sports organizations and competitions.
