Jurgen Klopp defended striker Darwin Nunez after showing an unforgettable performance from the new signing after Liverpool lost 1-0 to Salzburg on Wednesday night.

Austria, 23, played only the first half and then replaced Roberto Firmino at half-time, with the Reds dominating the second half unmatched.

Nunez struggled to make a big impact in the first half, but Klopp said it was more due to a lack of ammunition provided by his teammates.

The Germans said their new striker was too dangerous in the second half and Mo Sarah, Luis Diaz and Trent Alexander Arnold would come in and offer a better pass.

“We prepared the boys, and everything is fine, they can be much better and they had some good moments,” Klopp said. “But most of the players have to get used to our work, especially in the first half.

Darwin was often alone. Everyone went down and everyone participated in the rally, but it was too wide to pass the ball to Darwin alone in the area.

“He had his moment and scored more, but he needs more support. You keep other players in check so they can’t focus on him. I have a lot of stuff.”

“Imagine if Darwin was in the box now in the second half, that helped too. That’s what it is, it doesn’t feel right, but we take it and go from here…

Klopp was unhappy with some of the tough challenges from the home side, especially in the second half, but claims he won’t keep it up into the night.

“It wasn’t very friendly with Salzburg,” said the Reds coach. “Not so much for us.

“Salzburg had a very difficult task, but it’s working very well. To the credit of Salzburg, they’re doing very well. Sometimes I really didn’t like the challenge, but that’s fine, I guess nothing happened there.”
