England captain Leah Williamson revealed after sharing with His Royal Highness what Prince William told her at the Euro 2022 Trophy presentation on Sunday.

The Arsenal defender has barely entered the entire competition, but another safe and confident display is created against Germany at Wembley when goals from Ella Tunney and Chloe Kelly secured the trophy.

In his role as president of the Football Association, the Duke of Cambridge was one of the officials who celebrated the victory of the England Lions as they collected their medals and made their way to the trophy stage.

Most of the players received nothing more than a handshake and brief congratulations from Prince William, but some players received a surprise hug.

Among them was Captain Williamson, the last player to cross the line-up to lift the trophy, sharing an emotional moment with a beaming Prince William.

The two spoke for a while and His Highness walked over to the England captain for a big hug, visibly shaking, and gave Williamson a loud round of applause as he collected the trophy.

When asked about the hug and what he said, Williamson revealed: He told me, “I’m so proud of you.”

Williamson was also delighted to receive a heartfelt congratulations from the Queen, adding: “I’m a huge fan of the royal family, that means a lot.”

The 2-1 win over Germany was played in front of a record 87,192 fans, with 17.4 million viewers on BBC One making it the most watched show of 2022.

Williamson believes England’s victory goes beyond their achievements on the pitch to have a profound impact on the public and the perception of women’s football.

“This team’s legacy is to win and this is the beginning of a journey.”

The 25-year-old added: We talked and talked and finally did it.

“This is the proudest moment of my life until I have children. I’m going to talk. I want to live it over and over again.”
