On Tuesday, ESAP sent a letter to some government ministers, asking them to take charge of the money from the Betting on professional sports.
In detail, the letter:
“The Board of Directors of ESAP at the meeting of August 2, 2022 dealt with the developments taking place in professional sports regarding the distribution of income from Betting and games of chance and it was decided to send the following letter to:
1. Minister of Finance, Christos Staikouras
2. Deputy Minister of Finance, Theodoros Skylakakis
3. Deputy Minister of Finance, Apostolos Vesyropoulos
4. Deputy Minister of Culture and Sports, Eleftherios Avgenakis
Dear gentlemen,
Following yesterday’s briefing by Mr. Deputy Minister of Sports to the president of our cooperative, we inform you that today the Board of Directors of ESAP held an extraordinary meeting with the sole agenda item being the non-payment, at least for this year, of money from the liquidation of the percentage on the taxation of the “Bet”.
Regardless of the fact that the institutionalization of the financing of sports from the state revenues of the taxation of “Betting” is something that everyone credits to the State and especially to your persons.
We must, however, point out that the non-payment of any amount, from March 2021 until now, and possibly until February 2023, has caused a huge problem for our member unions.
We all waited for the outcome of the liquidation, hoping that we would be vindicated and collect what is due to us, based on the percentages set out in the relevant MLAs.
Unfortunately, we found that this was not the case, culminating in the non-payment of our teams who competed in Europe last season, an injustice which we believe must be redressed immediately.
It is also clear that the financial planning of all our teams and especially the three clubs that won their promotion to the Volley league, has been “blown up” and the start of the league is in doubt, not because we want to oppose you , but because we simply lose weight.
After the latest developments and for the aforementioned reasons, we turn to you, who in practice and in fact are the “pillar bearers” of Greek volleyball, and request (in the form of an advance payment in view of 2023) the immediate financial support of ESAP’s TAA.
It is the only solution, in order to achieve balance and for all teams to start the championship on the same terms.
Knowing your firmly confirmed interest, we believe that, once again, you will find a way to continue to have the support of the State, and this support we assure you in turn, that we will repay it with a competitive championship, worthy of the top of the world.
Otherwise, we entrust you with our anxiety that it is now becoming from doubtful to almost impossible, even to start the new championship”.
The chairman of ESAP’s Board of Directors, Pantelis Tarnatoros
