Germany coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg fell out with several referees in the Euro 2022 final, but eventually conceded that England “deserved to be champions”.

England won their first major trophy since 1966 by beating Germany 2-1 at Wembley with goals from Ella Tunney and Chloe Kelly.

Voss-Tecklenburg lamented after the game. The situation inside the penalty area was clear hand.

The VAR saw it but did not give it. Why aren’t the referees looking? He hurt me a bit.

I wanted to play bravely, score the first goal and play under a lot of pressure. When we gained possession, we conceded a goal.

“We were a bit unlucky going 2-1 after extra time. Maybe we should have scored a penalty.”

In a very close match, both teams dominated the match and created plenty of chances in front of a raucous crowd of 87,192. This is the European record for men and women.

Voss-Teklenberg said: ‘England deserve champions.

Score two goals against Germany and you deserve the championship. Congratulations.

“There’s a lot of energy and pride in my team. It’s been incredibly loud. It’s going to help us going forward.”

We put everything on the pitch, everything went wrong, but we put in sweat and fight and energy. I have no choice but to process it.

“We came to win the game and we didn’t. Maybe tomorrow we’ll have different feelings.”

Second place feels pretty good, but it hurts a bit. Only one team can win today.
