Yannis Korakidis won gold in the hammer throw at the U20 World Athletics Championships held in Cali, Colombia. Although at first our champion was canceled by the organizers in the fifth attempt and the impressive 79.11 that gave him the first place, the Greek delegation lodged an objection and was vindicated.
Initially, the very long shot appeared in the official system and was valid for the first time, which is the top shot in the world this year in the specific age category and a new individual record for Korakidis, who left history with 77.12. But then the official, through the video, invalidated the shot of the Greek champion.
The Greek delegation was immediately mobilized, i.e. the head of SEGAS in the organization, Giorgos Giatrudakis, as well as the technical director, Stefanos Matakis, protested strongly and, subsequently, there was a verbal objection, so they asked for the officials to see and analyze the video, something that happened and justice came for our country.
Thus, the original result was canceled and a new one was issued, with Giannis Korakidis emerging as world champion, giving us the third gold and the 17th medal overall in the event.
Korakidis had detailed shots: 73.84, void, 69.80, void, 75.59, 79.11, void.
The silver medal was won by Finnish Max Lappinen with 76.33 and the bronze by Cypriot Iosif Kesidis with 76.32. Fourth was Nikos Polychroniou with 76.12, losing third place to Kesidis’ last attempt.
