The game was really decided in the details, as until two minutes before the end the two teams were either tied or had a one-goal difference. The national team succeeded and recovered immediately from the initial difference of three goals and stayed alive until the end in the hunt for gold.

This, however, does not negate the great course and the conquest of second place on the planet.

The match

The big final of the World Cup in Belgrade started with the American women finding spaces in the “blue and white” defense and quickly managing to take a three-goal lead (4-1). Two excellent goals from Dionysias Kouretas kept the difference firmly within the same range as the first eight minutes ended 5-2.

But the picture was completely different at the start of the second period. The girls of Eftychia Karagianni tightened their belts in defense and left the American girls in one goal energetic, while through their good defense they found a rhythm in the attack and reached 6-6, which was the score of the first half. Great shots from all the girls, Fotini Tricha, Christina Siouti and Nefeli Chaldaiou who equalized with a crazy buzzer beater rebound.

The second half started as the first one ended… The two teams went goal-goal without anyone being able to escape. The third eight minutes ended with a narrow lead (8-7) for the USA.

The final eight minutes featured even tougher defenses, with neither team finding the back of the net for about five minutes. USA scored on the above and went +2 (9-7). The National team, however, responded immediately with Kalogeropoulou perfectly finishing an excellently executed overhand and reducing the score to 9-8, three minutes before the end. However, after a strange phase, Jenna Flynn with a powerful shot made it 10-8, which was the final score.
