Ahead of her appearance in the first round of the tournament in Toronto, h Maria Sakkari talked about the great challenge of being a Top 10 player and promised something better.
What he said in detail:
“Especially after the match with Paula (Badoza), I’m sure you’ll remember, it was a very emotional moment because I obviously knew I was going to be in the Top 3 after winning that match. I’m not saying that I had this goal for my career, to be No.3, my goal has always been to reach No.1 and win Grand Slams.
When you come from a country, especially in tennis, with the wrong mentality… I was always the player that because my mother was very famous back then in my home country, I always heard that I would never make it. No matter if he changes many coaches or moves to Spain, he will never succeed. Then suddenly, out of nowhere, I find myself being one of the best players in the world.
For me it was very difficult to manage that and as I mentioned before, sometimes I didn’t enjoy being on tour, playing every week. Then you pause and realize all you’ve accomplished.
Having my mother by my side and constantly reminding me how many people love you, how many people are proud of you and that you should realize what you have achieved. It takes time for everyone and I think it took time with me too, but I feel like I’m back on the right path, I’m myself and I think you’ll see a different Maria in the next 3 months.”
Appreciated ????Maria Sakkari’s honesty to @FortyDeuceTwits‘ question about the challenges being a top 10 player for the first time in a full season.
Sakkari remains optimistic:
“I believe you’re going to see a different Maria than the last three months.”#NBO22 pic.twitter.com/iU6k50cGbs
