Grêmio wins São Paulo and keeps hope of salvation

by

In one of their best matches in the Brazilian Championship, Grêmio beat São Paulo this Thursday (2), by 3-0, and managed to keep alive the hope of remaining in the elite of the Brazilian Championship.

The team from Rio Grande do Sul had ample control of the match and built its victory with goals from Thiago Santos, in the first stage, and Diogo Barbosa and Jhonata Robert, in the second. The third, incidentally, was a great goal, from midfield, which surprised Tiago Volpi early. The owners of the house also hit two balls on the crossbar.

With the result, the team led by Vagner Mancini has 39 points, in 18th position. The situation is still quite delicate, as to avoid a fall, Grêmio will have to win their last two games and hope for a combination of results involving their rivals in the fight against relegation.

On Sunday (5), the team from Rio Grande do Sul will face Corinthians, in Itaquera. Then, in the last round, the game will be against the already champion Atlético-MG, again in Porto Alegre.

In these two clashes, Grêmio fans expect the same impetus that the team showed against the Morumbi team.

Grêmio played the match as if they were in a decision, while São Paulo played as if they had nothing left to win (or lose) at Nacional. Despite this, the São Paulo’s are still at risk of relegation and, as controversial as it may seem, they could also win a place in the next Libertadores.

In 12th place, the squad led by Rogério Ceni totals 45, five more than Bahia, the 17th, and four less than América-MG, the eighth place and owner of the last place in the preliminary phase of the continental tournament.

In the last two rounds, the tricolor squad will face Juventude, on Monday (6), at home, and finish their journey at the Brazilian Nationals, just in front of América, on the 9th, in Minas.

In order to have the chance to compete in the continental competition, which would be a great prize for a club that fought during a good part of the Nacional to get away from the last positions, São Paulo will need to have a very different posture from the one they presented in Porto Alegre.

In addition to the strength of the Grêmio fans, the lack of São Paulo organization on the field made life easier for the owners of the house, who could have won for an even higher score.
