Kieron Pollard made 34 of 11 balls and Jordan Thompson took four wickets as the London Spirit beat the Manchester Originals in their 100th first Rhodes game of the year.
Pollard hit four sixes in a short but decisive inning to put the Spirit up 160-6. Four Thompson wickets then saw the Originals pitched for just 108.
After defeating local rivals the Oval Invincibles, the London Spirit are 2-2 at the top of the Hundred Group table.
Manchester United, on the other hand, have suffered two defeats in their opening match and need to turn things around quickly to qualify for the knockout stage.
London’s spirit was restored on a power play as Zach Crowley and Glenn Maxwell found regular bounds after Adam Rossington fell to the fastball duck.
Australia’s Maxwell went down as they threatened to explode at 21, but a 54-run partnership between Crowley and Eoin Morgan gave the hosts momentum.
Five sixes were hit in a fruitful three-wicket partnership, with England Test opener Crowley going down for 41 and former Whiteball captain Morgan free for 37.
Paul Walter’s second wicket of the night took the London Spirit to 136-6 with nine deliveries to play, but a late flourish from successful foreign star Pollard took the hosts to 160.
Despite a small backcourt on one side of the field and a star-studded batting lineup, the Manchester Originals chase ended as soon as it began.
His problems were emulated by the rest of the team, as Jos Buttler was only able to manage six out of eleven and was the only player from Manchester’s seven forwards to reach double figures.
Yorkshire’s Thompson topped the top order with a record of 4-21 from 20 pitches, while Liam Dawson also held off hitting two scalps and sending off the only ‘Manchester Original’ player. Phil Salt, who worked for 36 years.
Manchester’s original fortunes were confirmed when number 11 Matthew Parkinson pitched with two balls remaining for Mason Crane as Butler’s side fell to a 52-run crushing defeat.
The London Spirit will be attempting to maintain a perfect record when they take on the Southern Braves on Friday, while the Manchester Originals will be desperate to secure their first win the following day against the Trent Rockets.
