Joachim Andersen has accused Dravin Nunes of stupidity after the Liverpool striker was sent off on his home debut.
Acquired in the summer from Benfica, he received marching orders just before game time when he targeted a Crystal Palace defender after minimal provocation.
Jürgen Klopp blamed Andersen for the striker’s injury, but Andersen insists the 23-year-old is solely responsible for himself.
“I sat very close to him the whole match and really annoyed him and played well against him,” he told the Evening Standard.
“He crucified me, the first, and I told him he shouldn’t do it. I was angry with him.
“Then he did it again. A definite red card because it’s really ridiculous for me.”
Nunes will be suspended for three matches, including next Monday’s heavyweight clash with Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Asked how he would deal with Nunes’s red card, Klopp said: “Of course I will talk to him.
“I wanted to go in and see the situation. I didn’t see anything in the game, so I didn’t know what happened.”
I saw Andersen fall to the ground and Darwin walk away. That was my photo. So I already asked the players and the only thing I saw was ‘good, red card’. Incorrect reaction to the situation.
Andersen wanted it and got it. But Darwin, he made a mistake, so of course let’s talk about it. But not yet.
He added: This is a clear red card and it cannot be denied.
Yes, you will learn from it. Unfortunately, he now has some games. It’s not great for us, especially in our particular situation, but it is.
