Jürgen Klopp has joked that Liverpool were cursed by witches for sudden injuries.
A week ago on Monday night, in a 1-1 draw with Crystal Palace, the Reds lost several key players to injuries and Klopp said his starting line-up was far from peak.
Diogo Jota, Ibrahima Konate, Curtis Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all sat out through injury before the start of the season, while Thiago Alcantara joined the treatment room after the season opener against Fulham.
However, Joel Matip and Roberto Firmino were left out of the match against Palace, while Joe Gomez and Jordan Henderson were only considered worthy of the bench.
“Sunday was crazy,” Klopp said after Monday’s game.
“Every day it was like someone was eliminated for the craziest reason.
Joey finally [Gomez] He didn’t start, and I have to say he didn’t start because he went back to training yesterday.
“Hendo, I heard this morning that there was some concern that he played too long, so he didn’t play too long. It was a nasty situation.
cop [Firmino] I could not do it. He may be ready again next week. [Matip] I think it will take more than 2 weeks. you will see
Klopp wants as many players back on the pitch as soon as possible after picking up just two points from the first two games of the season.
The absence of Gomez, Matip and Konate meant that a fit Nat Phillips was forced to start against the Eagles, while the center back looked out of place against Wilfried Zaha and Eberechi Eze.
Firmino’s return cannot come soon enough for Liverpool as the team currently do not have a natural striker for the next three games.
Liverpool’s next game is another on Monday night, this time against fierce rivals Manchester United at Old Trafford.
