Absent from the US Open, but for a good reason, Angelique Kerber will be. The 34-year-old German, who has won three Grand Slam titles, is pregnant and will not take part in the major tournament in New York starting on August 29.
Kerber last competed at this year’s Wimbledon, where she lost in the third round to Belgium’s Elise Mertens. The former No. 1 in the world ranking won her “maiden” Grand Slam title at the Australian Open in 2016, while in the same year she also celebrated the US Open, as a result of which she “climbed” to the top of the world in women’s tennis. Two years later, the left-handed tennis player won the title of her career at a grand slam tournament, winning at Wimbledon.
