Jamie Carragher praised Lisandro Martinez’s ‘aggressive’ performance in Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Liverpool, but the Argentine’s height is ‘a problem’ for Erik ten Hag this season, he argued it would be

Half-goal goals from Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford gave United their first victory in the Ten Hag era after a string of Premier League defeats.

Martinez, meanwhile, started alongside Rafael Varane, while ten Haag benched captain Harry Maguire.

Ajax’s £56.7m summer signing has been an impressive performance at the heart of United’s defence, but Carragher has acknowledged the Argentine’s performance, but his short stature is a concern.

“I thought I’d be his guy tonight,” Carragher said of Martinez after United beat Liverpool.

Reading the game, running behind smartly, tension and aggression will be more important than Liverpool playing direct football.

“Obviously he’s a very aggressive player and that’s the coach.” [Ten Hag] He knows him better than anyone.

That’s what he does, he’s a very aggressive defender, he’s a fighter, he scored in the first two games but it never happened against Liverpool or Manchester City. . .

As for Martínez, he is very aggressive, he reads the game well, he sees the ball well.

“All I can say about him is, because of his size, he’s a problem for him. Five-foot-nine is a problem, no matter what anyone says.”

But the best centre-back I have ever seen is Franco Baresi. He was 5 feet 9 inches, 5 feet 10 inches. He hasn’t played for England, but he has to make up for his short stature and excel at everything else. That was Barez.

Baresage has brought the whole team together. He took the ball out at lightning speed. He was almost 10/10 in everything and probably 6/10 in the passing game.

Martinez proved it tonight. He has to be very good with the ball, he has to win duels on the pitch, he has to read the game, he has to organize the defense and can he be a warrior? If he is tall or big, he compensates for his lack of height

“But being 5ft 9in in the Premier League is stressful.”
