Corinthians may demote Grêmio and take revenge for fall in 2007

Corinthians enters the field against Grêmio this Sunday (5) at the Neo Química Arena, at 4 pm, with the chance to fight back an unfortunate passage in its history.

In 2007, the 1-1 tie between the two teams in the 38th round of the Brazilian Championship, at the Olímpico stadium, in Porto Alegre, relegated the Corinthians team to the second division of the Nacional.

This Sunday, in front of their fans, Corinthians can demote Grêmio to Série B. The match, valid for the 37th round, will be broadcast by Globo and SporTV.

Still with the fresh memory of the fall 14 years ago, the Corintian fan base Gaviões da Fiel mobilized around the possibility of giving back to Grêmio fans the bitter taste of sticking.

“On the saddest day of our lives, we were facing this same opponent — who participated, was proud of and gloated in our tragedy. That’s football, but the world turns, isn’t it?”, published the organizer, who asked for relegation from the opponent as an end-of-season gift.

Grêmio starts the round in 18th place, with 39 points, one less than Bahia (17th).

Corinthians decrees Grêmio relegation if it wins at the Neo Química Arena. Thus, the tricolors would not be able to reach opponents who are outside the worst four zone. Cuiabá, placed 16th, has 43 points.

The only way for Grêmio fans to guarantee that they are still alive in the fight is with a victory in São Paulo.

Corinthians, on the other hand, if they win, guarantees a direct spot in the 2022 Copa Libertadores group stage.

If the match ends in a draw or a Grêmio victory, the Corinthians depend on the results of Bragantino, Fortaleza and Fluminense to ensure, even in this round, their place in the groups of next year’s continental competition.

“Sunday (3) is going to be a war. And we are going to war,” said Grêmio coach Vagner Mancini, after the victory over São Paulo, on Thursday (2).
