First of all, I want to thank the women —candidates and journalists— for saving the first debate for the Presidency of the Republic, held on Sunday (28).
In a democracy, a debate is very important for us to try to understand, get to know and study the speeches and behavior of candidates.
The meeting promoted in “pool” by SheetUOL, Bandeirantes and TV Cultura was very well organized, and the presenters were great.
But when the current president and reelection candidate, asked about the harmony of the three powers, uses his first participation to defend coup plotters, he makes his intentions clear.
The candidate not only did not speak of harmony, but also defended eight businessmen who are being investigated for inciting a coup d’état if he loses the election. To make matters worse, he also defended federal deputy Daniel Silveira, to whom he granted amnesty – the congressman was convicted of attacks and threats to the Supreme Court.
Who is Daniel Silveira?
How important is it for Brazilian political history?
Who knows this citizen in foreign policy?
Why does the president care so much about this person if he is insignificant in our politics?
It is a disrespect for democracy and makes it clear that the president has no interest in a democratic Brazil, but in a country of coup plotters.
Unfortunately, the first half of the contest between the candidates boiled down to the men. At certain times, it even seemed that only Lula, Bolsonaro and Ciro Gomes were running.
They almost forgot the presence of two female candidates, and if one did not defend the other, they would simply be run over.
If they didn’t touch on topics such as rape, sexual harassment, moral harassment and femicide, topics that are super important for society, men would say nothing.
But it was the reelection candidate himself who involuntarily ended up reinforcing the importance of combating machismo and misogyny, when he attacked journalist Vera Magalhães. Bolsonaro scored an own goal, giving opponents even more ammunition against him and certainly increasing his rejection rates with voters.
There, women’s issues, practically ignored until then, gained prominence and even entered the speeches of the men present.
As Vera herself said after the debate, Bolsonaro’s attack on her was nothing new, as he doesn’t like to be questioned – even less by women. The subject has a history of verbal attacks on women, as Simone Tebet also reinforced, and on women journalists.
I liked the participation of Simone and Soraya Thronicke in the debate. They showed to be two women of personality, and we are in need of a strong change of gender in the public power, but they need to change the thinking in relation to indigenous peoples.
Anyway, among the top three candidates in the polls, it was clear that both Ciro and Lula are infinitely more prepared than this liar of the current president, who did nothing but commit rudeness, display his uncontrollable behavior. sexist and obviously lying all the time.
Finally, I want to congratulate all the journalists who presented and asked questions in this debate, because without you, women would be forgotten.
Long live Vera!
A cheer also for Patrícia Campos Mello, Mônica Bergamo, Ana Estela de Sousa Pinto, Thais Oyama and Juliana Rosa, journalists who questioned the candidates about topics that were dear and poorly addressed by them – and despised by at least one of them.
If Caco Antibes, Miguel Falabella’s legendary character in “Sai de Baixo”, was in the debate, I have no doubt he would shout several times:
“SHUT UP, BOLSONARO!”
