Serena Williams retired from tennis after losing to Ajula Tomljanovic at the US Open, but has left the door open to pick up a racket in the future.
The 40-year-old broke down in tears as she lost to Australia 7-5 6-7 (4-7) 6-1 in what appeared to be the final match of an incredible 27-year professional career.
The American has won 23 Grand Slam singles titles and a further 14 doubles titles with her sister Venus.
On Friday night at Flushing Meadows, he wanted to thank those who helped him get to that point, including the lucky few who saw the final game in person.
Thank you to everyone who has been by my side over these years and decades. “Oh my gosh, literally decades,” Williams said.
But it all started with my parents. And they deserve it all. So I am very grateful to them. If it wasn’t for Venus, I wouldn’t be Serena, so thank you Venus. She is the only reason Serena Williams existed.
It was a fun trip. It was the most amazing ride and journey of my life so far. And I’m so thankful to everyone in my life who said ‘Go Serena’.
Serena’s fans are worried that this will be the last time they see her on the court, but they may be motivated by the beard teasing.
When asked if this was really the end, he replied, “I think so, you don’t know.”
But she also talked about what she’s doing now with tennis behind her, saying, “I’m ready to become a mother and explore another version of Selena.
“Technically speaking, I’m still very young and I want to live my life while still walking.”
However, as for his immediate plans, it seems that he will appear on the microphone on Saturday.
“I’m definitely going to go to karaoke tomorrow,” he said when asked how he would spend his first day after tennis.
