Testimony from Deda about what happened to Gelovac

by

Emotional statements regarding Stefan Gelovats, granted by Stefanos Dedas in “sports walla”, with the coach of AEK talking about what happened after the stroke of the Serb, but also the shock that prevails in the “Union”.

The statements of the Union technician are detailed:

“Three weeks ago I was with the players in a video update. Gelovac did not sit with us because he had an ankle injury. He was in the treatment room riding an exercise bike. When we finished the briefing, we sent the players to organize a training session and we saw people running and calling an ambulance. He was conscious, we managed to communicate with him for a while, but we realized that something was wrong and that he probably had a stroke.

We canceled training immediately, and the players were in the hospital. We played the game against Riga in the Champions League the next day without training, but we played for him, we fought like crazy and we won. Then we defeated Lavrio in the championship and went to the break of the National team. When we had time without training and games, we realized how serious the situation is. He did not think at all of the possibility of ending like this. He is a young man and we thought he would get out of it, even if he did not meet one hundred percent. The good news did not come from the hospital and when there was no deterioration everything was fine.

Due to the coronavirus, we could not visit Stefan at the hospital. The general manager and the technical director of the team were in constant contact with the family and the doctors. The whole group went to the hotel where our parents were and met with them. So we still had hopes that it would end well. No one was fooling himself into coming back to play basketball and we hoped he would wake up with as few disabilities as possible. For the last two weeks we have been preparing mentally for the worst, so yesterday’s announcement of his death did not surprise the team members. When the family requested that he be transferred to Serbia over the weekend for further treatment, it was clear to us that hope had been dashed.

It is so sad and strange that a young man died of a stroke. There were no warning signs that this could happen at all. I have been a coach for over 20 years and nothing like this has happened to me. It is a difficult experience, having a life lesson. Basketball is in proportion, and I realized what really matters. The truth is that I was in a similar mood after the rocket attacks in Israel when I was with my children in Holon. But you know how it is, over time, the shock goes away, you go back to everyday life, to results and to basketball.

We will send representatives to the funeral in Serbia this week and try to overcome this loss together. I know it’s always been rumored about who died, but Stefan was a really amazing guy. Serious, respectful, polite, smiling, who does not cause problems, maintains professionalism and is always committed to his work “.
