European U21 Table Tennis Championship: Papadimitriou begins her quest in Romania

by

The European Table Tennis Championship for male and female athletes up to 21 years of age takes place 14-18/09 in Cluj Napoca, Romania and includes all individual events. Malamatenia Papadimitriou was included in the invitations from the European Union of the sport and will live a new and valuable experience in a personal journey that has already been characterized by many and varied international participations.

Under the technical guidance will be the women’s national federation coach, Giorgos Karytsas and the two left by air for Romania on Tuesday afternoon with the aim of the best possible course among the best New Women of the “old continent”.

The institution started in 2017, concerns only individual events and gathers up to 56 athletes and 56 athletes, almost exclusively based on the European evaluation tables. This year’s event is the sixth in a row, will have entries from 28 countries and the Romanian city took over after the European Men’s-Women’s Team Championships in 2021.

The champion of Greece in the Junior Women’s Singles in 2021 got one of the free tickets for the event, having a good position in the ranking list.

Apart from the fact that Greece has at least one athlete every year in the European U21 Championship, there are also very pleasant memories of the institution, but also of the city of Romania. The huge Yannis Sgouropoulos has twice won the gold medal in the Junior Men’s Singles (2019, 2021), while in Cluj Napoca he celebrated his second European title in the Junior Singles in 2018.

The championship begins with the qualifying singles groups. On the second day, Thursday, the first section will have the mixed doubles, followed by the men’s and women’s doubles events. The mixed doubles final takes place first next Saturday and the remaining four finals are scheduled for the last day, next Sunday.

Early Tuesday afternoon, the draws were held. For the first phase of the women’s singles K21, 12 groups were formed. Papadimitriou was in the sixth from the fourth series of the draws and will meet Poland’s Anna Wegrzyn (head), Czech Linda Zanderova and Norway’s Rikke Skatet.

The schedule of games in the group on Wednesday:

Papadimitriou-Zanderova at 09:45 (table 1)

Papadimitriou-Sketet at 14:15 (table 7)

Papadimitriou-Vegrzin at 18:00 (table 6)

The draw for the doubles has not yet taken place. In the Under 21 women’s doubles Papadimitriou will compete with the Hungarian Helga Dari and in the Under 21 mixed doubles with the Austrian Jonas Proberger.
