Swiss tennis player Roger Federer announced his retirement from the sport on Thursday. One of the world’s biggest tennis stars has said that next week’s Laver Cup will be his last ATP tournament.

“As many of you know, the last three years have presented me with challenges in the form of injuries and surgeries. I’ve worked hard to get back to full competitive shape. But I also know my body’s capabilities and limits and its message for lately has been cherished. 41 years old,” Federer said on Instagram.

“I’ve played over 1,500 games in 24 years. Tennis has treated me more generously than I could have dreamed, and now I must recognize when it’s time to end my competitive career.

“Next week’s Laver Cup in London will be my last ATP event. I will play more tennis in the future, of course, but not at Grand Slams or on the circuit.”

The legendary player was number 1 on the ATP world rankings for 310 weeks. He has won 20 Grand Slams, ranking third in the world in trophies behind Rafael Nadal (22) and Novak Djokovic (21).
