Benfica qualifies for Champions and Jorge Jesus is further away from Flamengo

by

Flamengo fans will probably have to wait a little longer if they want to see Jorge Jesus back at the club.

This Wednesday (8), the Portuguese coach’s Benfica (POR) beat Dynamo Kiev (UCR), in Lisbon, by 2-0, and qualified for the round of 16 of the Champions League.

Jesus’ team benefited from the defeat of Barcelona (ESP) in Munich, to Bayern (ALE), by 3-0. Thomas Müller, Leroy Sané and Jamal Musiala scored the goals of the Germans.

With the result of Barça, which started the round in second place, Benfica advanced in second place in Group E, with 8 points. The Bavarians, who had already secured a place in the next phase, finished top of the group, with 100% success – six victories in six matches.

In their first season without Lionel Messi, third-placed Barcelona will compete in the Europa League. The Catalan club had not been eliminated in the Champions group stage since the 2000/2001 edition.

In addition to the crisis aggravated by the elimination, the Europa League may represent the only viable way for Xavi’s team to qualify for the 2022/2023 Champions League. In the Spanish Championship, the team occupies only the seventh place.

For Group F, Manchester United (ING) drew with Young Boys (SUI) by 1-1, at Old Trafford, in the debut of coach Ralf Rangnick with the team in the Champions League. The English were already classified for the knockout.

The duel between Atalanta (ITA) and Villarreal (ESP), which would define the runner-up, had to be postponed due to the snow that fell in Bergamo, Italy, a condition that prevented the start of the match. Uefa informed that the game will be played on Thursday (9), at 15:00 (GMT).

The Spanish are the runners-up in the group, with 7 points, and the Italians come next, with 6.

In games valid for Group G, Lille (FRA) went to Germany and beat Wolfsburg (ALE) by 3-1. With the victory, they secured the classification in first place, with 11 points. In Austria, RB Salzburg (AUT) beat Sevilla (ESP) by 1-0 and, with 10 points, secured a spot in the next phase.

Earlier on Wednesday, Zenit (RUS) and Chelsea (ING) drew 3-3 in Russia. Midfielder Claudinho scored one of the goals for the St. Petersburg team.

In the other game of Group H, Juventus (ITA) beat Malmö (SUE) by 1-0 and classified themselves as leader of the group, with 15 points. Chelsea, at 13, advanced to second place.
