Structure collapse leaves 5 injured in open training at Colo-Colo, Chile

At least five people were injured this Friday (30) after the collapse of an advertising structure in the stands of the Monumental de Santiago stadium during an open training session at Colo-Colo.

“Controlled emergency: the five injured people were treated by SAMU (Emergency Medical Attention Service),” the firefighters said on Twitter.

The incident occurred when a group of fans climbed a metal structure where the advertising pieces are located, over one of the stands of the stadium, and the added weight caused the grid to give way.

At least 20,000 people were present at the stadium for the famous ‘arengazo’, a common practice of going to the stadium for the last training session before an important game to sing and motivate the squad.

Next Sunday, Colo-Colo will face the current champions of the Chilean Championship, Universidad Católica.

“We talk several times, in campaigns, in everything: that people behave. Insisting on this all the time is tiring and they don’t do it themselves. We need everyone to be there”, said defender Maximiliano Falcón through the club’s Twitter.

The team is leader of the Chilean Championship with 11 points of advantage over the second and third places, Curicó Unido and Ñublense, with five rounds of the end of the competition.

Colo-Colo secures the title this weekend if they beat Universidad Católoca and Curicó Unido and Ñublense lose their games.
