Burkina Faso: The army overthrew the head of the junta

Captain Ibrahim Traoré overthrew Lt. Col. Paul-Henri Sadaogo Dabiba and suspended the Burkina Faso Constitution.

A group of military personnel appeared tonight on the country’s public television and read a statement regarding the removal of the head of the junta. According to this statement, Dabiba “maintained the security system that had already failed under the previous governments” and that is why the military decided to depose him. The worsening security situation due to jihadist action justifies the army’s actions, they added.

In this context, the army suspended the Constitution, dissolved the government and decided to close the borders “until further notice”.

Earlier today, gunfire rang out from the capital’s largest camp while armed soldiers were seen on the main avenue leading to the presidential seat and public television.

This is the second coup in Burkina Faso in eight months. Militaries led by Lt. Col. Dabiba earlier this year toppled the government of president-elect Roque Marc Christian Cabore, vowing to make the fight against jihadists their top priority. The African country is faced, like neighboring states, with the action of armed organizations that swear allegiance to either Al-Qaeda or the Islamic State. Since 2015, Burkina Faso has counted thousands of dead, while almost two million citizens have been uprooted from their land.
