Opinion – The World is a Ball: Villarreal striker uses suction therapy against muscle pain

by

The photo of Dutch player Arnault Danjuma Groeneveld, from Villarreal (Spain), is impressive.

The unsuspecting might think he had a series of burns, brought on by… what would cause burns like that?

It’s not burns.

The marks, superficial, were caused by suction therapy, an alternative medicine technique used by those who want to improve blood circulation and reduce muscle fatigue, and can also combat pathologies such as gastritis, bursitis and rheumatism.

There are famous sportsmen who resort or have resorted to this process.

One of them is the American Michael Phelps, the best swimmer in history, now retired, owner of 28 Olympic medals (from Athens-2004 to Rio-2016), 23 of them gold.

In football, Neymar, from Paris Saint-Germain, and the Frenchman Benzema, from Real Madrid, are examples of fans of wind therapy.

According to the website Tua Saúde, supplied by professionals in the field since 2007, “suction therapy is a type of natural treatment in which suction cups are used to improve blood circulation in a part of the body”.

“For that, the suction cups create a vacuum effect, which sucks the skin, resulting in an increase in the diameter of the blood vessels at the site. As a result, there is greater tissue oxygenation, allowing the release of toxins from the blood and muscle with more easily.”

A suction cup is a cup-like object made of silicone, glass or metal that is applied to the skin, causing a vacuum effect that allows blood to flow to the dermal surface. In medical terminology, this procedure is hemospasm.

Each application of this technique, usually performed by an acupuncture specialist and contraindicated for patients with heart disease and pregnant women, lasts from 5 to 15 minutes.

Depending on the intensity of application, the region may be painful for a short period of time. And stains, red or purple, are inevitable.

In the case of striker Groeneveld, who has been suffering from muscle pain, he resorted to suction therapy over the weekend, a few days before Villarreal’s match against Atalanta in the European Champions League.

When posting the photo on social media, he wrote: “Take care of your body, you only have one”.

The Champions League game should have been played on Wednesday (8), in Bergamo (Italy), but a blizzard in the region forced the organization to postpone it to this Thursday.

When the ball rolls, we’ll know if the cupping therapy had any effect on the 24-year-old Dutchman.

If he plays well, there are those who will say that it was a consequence, even a psychological one, of the unorthodox treatment.
