The greatest… distinction of his sports career was celebrated by Adonis Georgiades in a tennis tournament he participates in Filothei. The Minister of Development and Investments advanced to the “16” of the tournament with an upset and described what happened in his game against Vassilis Antonopoulos.
In fact, the qualification came in an exciting way. His opponent was leading 7-4 in the super tiebreak, but he suffered an injury that disrupted his momentum. Nevertheless, it reached a match point (9-8), which Georgiadis “turned out” and took the victory with 11-9.
In detail, what he wrote:
“It is incredible the joy that a good fight can bring to a person. Yesterday I had the continuation of the tournament I participate in Filothei from 32 to 16. We started 128.
I was drawn with an amazing player worthy of respect, Mr. Vassilis Antonopoulos. I had been told since the tournament that he will probably beat me because he plays very strong tennis but I am generally a fighter in the game and I don’t give up easily.
The match starts and I easily go 2-0 game but there somewhere I start to rise and equalize. 3-2 Vassilis and I go on a streak and turn it to 3-5 and I even took a 0-30 lead on his serve to end the first set. But there it goes up again, we go 5-5, 5-6 me, 6-6 and in the tie break of the first set I lose 7-4. 1-0 set for Vassilis (matches in these tournaments are decided either by 2-0 sets or if there is a tie in the super tie break at 10).
In the second set, however, I came in very strong and relatively quickly I went 1-4 in my favor there, but again Vassilis turns it around and equalizes at 4-4. Luckily I rallied and finally took the set 4-6 and we went to the super tie break.
And that’s where the thriller starts, until 4-4 we’re point to point but Vasilis plays great and has me 7-4…but unfortunately there my opponent in the match gets a leg injury and falls down and the match is stopped. This favors me because Vassilis finally continued with a bandaged leg but also because the ten-minute break gives me time to catch my breath and find my rhythm again.
We go back to the match and not only do I tie at 7-7 but I go ahead 7-8. And yet Basil had not said his last word. He finds strength, ties me and goes ahead with 9-8 and serves for the match….and yet I manage and tie and take my serve where with two awesome points I finally win 9-11 and advance to the 16 for 8. The match will happen sometime today.
I want to congratulate my teammate and opponent today, Mr. Vassilis Antonopoulos. A great player and a player with brains and morals. He was unlucky because his injury came at the most critical point and it favored me but believe me I fought hard until the end!
At some point we will surely play a rematch with this amazing player.
I thank the amazing audience of the Attica Tennis Club Filotheis who supported both of us warmly, during the 3 hours that this awesome match lasted. At the end we were given a standing ovation for our effort.
And of course I thank the organizer of the tournament Mr. Fanis Theodoridis (14th FTO sponsored by Tennis Holdem) who convinced me to participate.
I am turning 50 on November 6th and I never thought that at this age I would be able to experience such an experience. I highly recommend it. Sport is both physical and mental health and all of us can do it (I did it here).
Regardless of what will happen in the next match, for me, yesterday was really a beautiful night”.
