Another case of rape in the field of sports came to light, this time from Latin America.
The former coach of the Brazilian national gymnastics team, Fernando de Carvalho Lopezwas sentenced to 109 years and eight months in prison for raping four athletes, including at least one minor 13 years old then. The former coach is expected to appeal, as he claims he is innocent.
According to Globo EsporteLópez was sentenced at first instance by a court in the city of São Bernardo do Campo, near São Paulo.
This is not the first time he has been accused of this type of offence, as four years ago around 40 athletes claimed to the “Globo TV” channel that they had been victims of sexual, physical and moral abuse by Lopez.
Some of them, in fact, had taken part in the legal process as witnesses to the events, which took place between 1999 and 2016, when the former coach was in charge of the club MESC in Sao Bernardo do Campo.
In 2016, Lopez moved away by the staff of the national team, shortly before the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, following a complaint by the parents of a young athlete.
In April 2019 he was banned for life any sport-related activity.
