Vibo Valentia, the Italian volleyball club in which Brazilian pointer Douglas Souza played, stated that the athlete left the city and left the team this Thursday (9) without authorization or any explanation.
“The club, deeply disappointed by the athlete’s inexplicable behavior, will take every action to ensure the team’s interests,” said the team, whose full name is Tonno Callipo Calabria Volley Vibo Valentia.
The information that Douglas, 26, decided to break his contract, leave Europe and return to Brazil was first disclosed by the website Vôlei, this morning.
The Brazilian pointer was hired by the Italian team for the current season and had been in the country for about three months, after having gained enormous popularity during his participation in the Tokyo Olympics —Brazil finished in fourth position. Until then, the 2016 Olympic champion had not played for a foreign team.
Douglas celebrated his return to the country and said on his social networks that he will have a “little surprise”, without specifying the reasons for his sudden return and without revealing whether he intends to act in another volleyball team.
He, who had already talked openly about adaptation problems in his experience in European volleyball, played ten games for Vibo Valentia, with two wins and eight losses. Two other Brazilians are on the team, MaurÃcio Borges and Flávio.
Douglas is followed by 2.9 million users on Instagram and 264,000 on Twitter. On social media, many fans attributed his attitude to a possible participation in BBB 22, scheduled to start in January.
The athlete has already shown interest in participating in the reality show on at least two occasions, during interviews with Galvão Bueno, still in Tokyo, and on the program Conversa com Bial, in November, when he was already in action for Vibo Valentia.
On the first occasion, Boninho, director of Globo’s reality shows group, confirmed that he was interested in the athlete as a participant in the program.
The report sought the player’s press office, but did not receive a response until the publication of this text.
