The family’s post in detail:
“A year and a half ago when Alexander had the very serious lung surgery in the middle of a pandemic, to thank Alexis Tsipras for all his help and support, he decided to give him one of the Olympic torches he had in his possession, this of the Sydney games. The president did not want to accept such a valuable gift, he told him that Alexander should keep it for his children, but Alexander insisted, he even told him characteristically: “President, take it and give it to your children as well, if you want them to play baseball in your living room with her, I only care to think that you have her.’
Yesterday after the ceremony, Alexis Tsipras, approached the family of Alexandros and told us that he wants to return this torch to us and put it together with his medals for auction. We thank him very much and after this move by the president, as a family we decided to add the last two Olympic torches that Alexander had to his collection, the one from the London Olympics and the one from Beijing for auction, the latter also has huge collector’s value, as Alexander was the first torchbearer in 2008.
Finally, shocked by the biblical disasters in Crete and the loss of our fellow human beings so unfairly, we decided that part of the proceeds from the objects that will be auctioned will also be given to the victims of Crete. We send you all a big hug, with the hope that we can ease your pain even a little bit.
Alexander’s family”.
