France chooses ‘freedom hats’ as Olympic mascot; understand what they are

by

France chose the “freedom hats”, originally called “Les Phryges”, as mascots for the Paris 2024 Olympic and Paralympic Games. the spirit of the French Revolution.

“The ‘Phryges’ aim to show that sport can change everything and that it deserves to have a prominent place in our society,” Paris 2024 brand director Julie Matikhine said on Monday (14).

Phrygian caps were preferred to be mascots rather than animals, chosen at other editions of the Games – such as the Panda ‘Bing Dwen Dwen’ at the 2022 Winter Games in Beijing.

“If we didn’t find a real reason to make a mascot and a real message to convey, we’d be ready not to have one,” Matikhine said.

“The mascot must embody the French spirit, which is something very easy to understand. It is an ideal, a kind of conviction that carries the values of our country, and that has been built over time, over history”, he added.

The Phrygian red caps come in two versions: the Olympic and the Paralympic. The latter will have a blade leg.

The Olympic Games will be held from July 26 to August 11, and the Paralympic Games from August 28 to September 8, 2024.
