France’s attacking midfielder Christopher Nkunku, 25, was injured during training on Tuesday (15) and has been ruled out for the World Cup, according to the French Football Federation (FFF).
The Leipzig player, top scorer in the German Championship, with 12 goals, suffered a sprain in his left knee on the eve of the departure of the ‘Blues’, current world champions, to Qatar.
There was no announcement of his replacement. The FFF awaits a position from FIFA, which should authorize changes to the list of 26 summoned by coach Didier Deschamps. In case of serious injuries, the regulation allows modification.
Although not likely to play in France’s starting line-up, Nkunku, named the best player in the Bundesliga last season, was classified as a luxury substitute.
The former Paris Saint-Germain player had celebrated his 25th birthday at the Clairefontaine training center this Monday (14).
The enthusiasm diminished the following day, after a collision with the Real Madrid player Eduardo Camavinga in the last training session before the trip to Doha, on the morning of Wednesday (16).
Nkunku joins defender Presnel Kimpembe and midfielders N’Golo Kanté and Paul Pogba among the French athletes who will be unable to participate in the World Cup due to injury.
