Argentine striker Sergio “Kun” Agüero, who defended Barcelona, announced his retirement from football this Wednesday (15), at 33 years of age, after being diagnosed with a heart problem.
Agüero, who over his 18 years as a professional has scored more than 400 goals, was taken to hospital on Oct. 30 after experiencing chest pain and breathing difficulties in Barcelona’s 1-1 draw with Alavés in the La Liga.
The club announced a few days later that he would be away for at least three months for a medical review.
“This press conference is to communicate that I have decided to stop playing football. It is a very difficult time, but I am at peace with the decision I made,” said Agüero, in tears, at Camp Nou.
“It’s a decision I made to preserve my health. It’s what the doctors told me, that it would be better to stop playing. I made the decision about 10 days ago. I’m very proud of my career, it was a dream come true . I just wanted to be a professional player and I never thought I would play in Europe,” he said.
The Argentinian arrived at Barcelona this season after ten years at Manchester City, but has played just five games in all competitions. Before the heart problem, he was hampered by a calf injury in the preseason. He scored a goal in the 2-1 home defeat by Real Madrid.
In England, Agüero won five Premier League titles with City, became the greatest scorer in the history of the blue team (260 goals) and one of its great idols.
In 2012, the team’s first Premier League trophy season in 44 years, he scored the decisive goal in the 49th minute of the final round game against Queens Park Rangers. The 3-2 victory guaranteed the title in the dispute against rival Manchester United.
Before becoming established in England, the forward began his professional career at Independiente and defended Atlético de Madrid.
For the national team, he was a gold medalist at the Beijing-2008 Olympics and won the 2021 Copa America, in addition to having played in three World Cups (2010, 2014, in which Argentina took the vice-championship, and 2018).
