Luisa Stefani celebrates the top 10 of the ranking as a major milestone in her career

by

For the first time in her career, Brazilian tennis player Luisa Stefani appears this Monday (1st) among the top ten in the world in doubles.

The 24-year-old from São Paulo occupies the 9th position in the list of the WTA (Women’s Tennis Association), after winning two positions even without entering the court. This happened thanks to discounts in the scores of other athletes who were ahead of her.

Luisa, who had already reached the best position of a Brazilian in the ranking since its creation in 1975, now also becomes a pioneer in the top 10.

“It’s always been a goal for me and it’s a great achievement to reach it. Too bad I’m not playing at the moment, but it’s still a big milestone in my career. I’m celebrating the little victories lately, during my recovery, so I’ll add this one on the list too,” said the athlete.

She is still recovering from surgery on her right knee, performed on September 27, after being injured during the US Open semifinal game, when she played alongside Canadian Gabriela Dabrowski and made her best campaign in a Grand Slam tournament . The two reached three finals in three tournaments played early in their partnership.

Before that, at the Olympics in Tokyo-2020, Luisa and Laura Pigossi won an unprecedented medal for the country, the bronze in doubles.

Luisa continues with daily physiotherapy sessions in Tampa (Florida), where she lives. At the end of November, she will come to Brazil for a new stage of recovery.

“It hasn’t been an easy process. It’s hard work on the physique, tiring, painful, sometimes boring, and there are days when the progress isn’t so clear, so it’s important to remain optimistic especially on those tough days. , new exercise and little step given is a great victory. It brings a feeling of achievement and of being one day closer to competing again,” he declared.

She recently told UOL’s Saque e Voleio column that she aims to return to play in the Rome tournament in May next year.

Five other Brazilian tennis players have already occupied the top 10 of a professional ranking since the 1970s: Gustavo Kuerten, in singles, and Marcelo Melo, Bruno Soares, Cássio Motta and Carlos Kirmayr, in doubles.
