Cup honors Maradona two years after the Argentine’s death

The two years since the death of the Argentine idol Diego Maradona was remembered this Friday (25) in Doha, Qatar, with FIFA members and former Argentine players who won the 1978 and 1986 World Cups.

Maradona died on November 25, 2020, victim of a cardiorespiratory arrest, in Tigre, in the Buenos Aires region.

At the event, organized by Conmebol, a symbolic tree called the Tree of Dreams was planted. A statue of Maradona holding a replica of the World Cup was also placed at the site.

Present were former players Sergio Batista, Jorge Valdano, Oscar Ruggeri, Jorge Burruchaga, Ricardo Bochini, Nery Pumpido, Ricardo Giusti and Héctor Enrique, who were Maradona’s teammates in the 1986 World Cup, and Fillol, Tarantini, Villa, Bertoni, Larrosa and Mario Kempes, champions of the 1978 World Cup.

Gianni Infantino, president of FIFA, suggested that in future World Cups there could be a day to remember Maradona.

A mural was also mounted in Doha, which was signed by fans.

Maradona played in the 1982, 1986, 1990 and 1994 World Cups. There were 21 games and eight goals scored. In 2010 he coached Argentina in the South African Cup, being eliminated in the quarterfinals.

Maradona was also honored on social media by Boca Juniors, Argentinos Jrs. and Napoli, clubs where the star made history.
