Takis Theodorikakos added that over 10,000 related cases have been handled by the police this year

18 domestic violence offices have been created and are now operating in the Greek police, where female officers are usually in charge, the Minister of Citizen Protection said. Takis Theodorikakosat the event for the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, held in the Hellenic World.

He added that over 10,000 related cases have been handled by the police this year, while the rates of solving incidents of violence against women and domestic violence barely exceed 90% this year. The number of women who “find the courage to speak” increased significantly, but their trust in the state and institutions increased, but the state’s ability to listen to these women also increased, Mr. Theodorikakos emphasized, among others. Mr. Theodorikakos described, that “we are investing in the targeted and continuous retraining of police officers on issues of gender-based violence, we have enriched the study programs at the Schools of the Police Academy, while the training of approximately 6,000 other police officers has already been completed”. “Masculinity is not violence against women, but love and respect for women,” concluded Mr. Theodorikakos.

The Deputy Minister of Justice spoke about the changes to the criminal code and the criminal procedure code in the direction of protecting victims. George Kotsiras. In particular, he talked about the tightening of the provisions that have to do with physical harm against women, the reintroduction of the offense of adult pimping, the tightening of the provision on human trafficking, the provision that in the examination of adult victims of sexual abuse offenses there will be a mandatory presence of a psychologist. Also, for four specific offences, (homicide, rape of a minor, gang rape and fatal rape) an exclusive sentence of life imprisonment was provided. Furthermore, the offense of child pornography was standardized and in relation to the offense of insulting genital dignity in the workplace, ex officio prosecution was foreseen, Mr. Kotsiras added. Finally, Mr. Kotsiras pointed out that the training of judicial officials has progressed in cooperation with the National School of Judges.

The panic button

The digital application panic button, which enables female victims of abuse to immediately request help, was presented by Haris Broumidis, president and CEO of the Vodafone company, which donated the application to the state.

By pressing the button on their mobile phone, without the abuser realizing it, the police authorities and the counseling centers of the ministry are automatically notified. The message received by the police includes the woman’s details and her current whereabouts.

The panic button will initially be used as a pilot for one year in Attica and Thessaloniki and concerns women who have suffered domestic violence and have contacted the local police authorities or counseling centers for the support of abused women. The aim is, after the completion of the pilot phase, to expand it throughout Greece, where other women and citizens will have access to it, while it can also be used in other forms of abuse.

Also, on December 15 on Google play and the Apple Store there will be the Greek version of the Bright Sky application, which has content specifically for victims of domestic violence and abuse of women, “so that there is the necessary information on how a woman can face, but above all to realize in time, that he is a victim of psychological or even physical violence”, pointed out Mr. Broumidis.
